Before First Lesson

2. A. My best piece of creative work

This oil painting is one of my 18 pieces collection of works that I did for my HSC Visual Arts Body of Work. The title of my collection of works is The Culture Collision. My work reflects my memories and experience of being both into one culture, Hong Kong and adopting a new culture, in Australia. I have juxtaposed elements from both cultures to also communicate ideas about the speed of change in today's society and the way technology and the built environment evidence this metamorphoses. In many ways this reflects my own experience of feeling changed as well as different levels of connection and disconnection with both cultures.

B. A great piece of architecture
MAXXI stands for Museum of 21st Century Arts designed by Zaha Hadid is the first Italian public museum devoted to contemporary creativity, arts and architecture. As I have limited knowledge of architecture I was very amazed when I discovered this building from one of my case study on Zaha Hadid in year 11. I agreed with her idea of "People don't want to be in the kind of space that they inhabit everyday," she engages with her audience through intriguing them with complex and interesting shapes in her works, leaving the interpretation up to the viewer. As well as her idea of rather than making a space for the building, the building was made for the space, the site of the building was in an unusual L shape and I guess this is why MAXXI has proved to be the biggest challenge in construction. Using the idea of fluidity from water, Zaha moved away from the idea of a museum as an object or building towards the idea of it as a field of buildings and public space. By using skylights, she could further depict this effect. The audience including me is always amazed at how she comes up with one unique design after another, switching between smooth, swirling lines that lose themselves in one another in another and sharp, crisp lines and blocky shapes.

C. An original photograph of something beautiful
This image was taken last year in July, a view from my balcony where I used to live. I remember that day it has been raining all day and I was quite upset and frustrated because I have exams coming up, and I could n't focus, I couldn't fall asleep because of the noises from the rain. So I decided take a break and walked to the balcony and saw this rainbow. It was my first time being able to see a complete rainbow and not just part of it. Although its not a very nice or beautiful professional photograph but the rainbow itself was beautiful and has cheered me up. It was really hard to capture because right after I took this image the next second its gone already!!
